Is there a word and/or character limit for my short answer responses?

Your short answer/narrative responses must follow the word count limit AND the character limit specified on the application.

  • The word count limit is provided in the application question/instructions
  • The character limit is provided underneath the text box where you enter your response

Note: the character limit counts each individual letter, number, punctuation mark, space, etc. entered in your response.

Example: If the max word count is 300 and the character limit is 2000, this means your response needs to be no more than 300 words AND no more than 2000 characters.

You can easily track both the word count and character limit when you draft your response in a word document. 

  • Microsoft Word: simply click the word count at the bottom of the window/tool bar
  • Google Docs: go to Tools > Word Count
